Readpeater – Privacy Policy

Privacy Policy for Readpeater

Effective Date: September 29, 2026
Developer: Metaphor Projects
Contact: [email protected]

Overview

Readpeater (“the App”) helps you practice reading aloud in Chinese and English. It follows your reading position, shows feedback, and saves results for later review. This policy explains what data the App uses, when it may contact other services, and the controls available to you.

Data on Your Device

You can use the App without creating an account. The App handles text you import, paste, or capture from a photo; microphone audio while you read; reading results and recordings; member profiles; vocabulary; and your settings. These are stored on your device so you can reopen articles, review progress, and replay parts of a reading. Settings may include API keys you enter for optional AI services.

Reading recognition and scoring use speech recognition models on your device. Metaphor Projects does not receive your articles, microphone recordings, reading history, or API keys as part of this local processing. The App does not include advertising or analytics SDKs.

You can delete articles, reading sessions, or member profiles in the App, clear older recordings, and export or import a backup. The App also removes the oldest saved readings when the number of sessions exceeds 1,000. A backup is saved to the location you choose and may contain articles, reading records, recordings if selected, and vocabulary. It does not include your settings or API keys. Removing the App or its data through your device’s settings can remove locally stored information; copies you exported remain under your control.

Optional Network Features

Speech recognition models are downloaded from the source you choose when needed. These downloads contact the selected model host (such as Hugging Face, GitHub, or ModelScope), which may receive ordinary connection information such as your IP address. The model files are stored on your device.

If you configure and use an AI provider, the App sends the information needed for the feature you request to that provider. Depending on the feature, this can include article text or excerpts for reading assistance and explanations, selected words for definitions, a photo for text recognition, reading results for a review, or text for generated speech. The App also sends the provider configuration and API credentials needed to authenticate requests. You can choose a local Ollama service instead of a remote provider. The provider’s handling of submitted data is governed by its own privacy policy and your agreement with it.

When you look up an English word without a configured AI dictionary provider, the selected word is sent to dictionaryapi.dev. Chinese pinyin lookup works locally when no AI dictionary provider is configured. System text-to-speech and supported system text recognition use operating-system features; their processing and privacy behavior depend on your operating system and its settings.

Sharing and Retention

Metaphor Projects does not operate an account or cloud storage service for your Readpeater content. We do not sell your data. Information sent to an optional service is handled by that service under its own terms. Local data remains on your device until you delete it, the App removes older sessions as described above, or you clear the App’s data or uninstall it, subject to any backups you have made or device-level backup settings.

Children’s Privacy

Readpeater is a reading practice tool. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children through an account or our servers. If a child uses optional third-party services, a parent or guardian should review the selected provider’s terms and privacy policy.

Security

The App keeps its local data in its application storage and uses the network for the optional features described above. Protect your device and any API keys you enter, and choose providers you trust when sending text, photos, or reading information.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the App changes. We will revise the effective date above when we do.
